| Name: Nagato Gender: Male Age: 23 Species: Human
Element: Wind Water Lightning Earth Fire Yin-Yang
Personality: Nagato was a sensitive but kind boy, prone to crying, and was traumatized by the idea he had killed another man, even to save his friend Yahiko. Scared and unsure of his place in the world, he desired to help those he cared about, but never knew how. Nevertheless, he was a talented and gifted student, mastering every technique Jiraiya had taught him.
As Pain, his personality was very different, having become a calm, serious, aloof, and detached man. Apparently believing traumas he experienced in his youth had enlightened him to the true meaning of pain and suffering, he considered himself a deity, and believed he had evolved beyond a mere human being. He sought to show the world the meaning of pain by using an ultimate weapon to deter future wars, by means similar to "mutually assured destruction", and showed no moral qualms about his actions. He was also willing to kill his own teacher, Jiraiya, in cold blood, and brutally executed all of Hanzō's friends and family to ensure Amegakure's compliance to his takeover. He even went so far as to proclaim himself a "god of peace", that had to guide the world to maturity through pain. Finally, he felt that no-one could understand true peace unless they understood "true" pain, something his childhood friend Yahiko believed. Minato Namikaze believed Madara Uchiha to have been using this philosophy in his favour, in order to manipulate Nagato.
Pain also held hatred for Konoha, because, during the war between Konohagakure and Amegakure, his parents died by the hands of two Konoha ninjas. Nagato's hatred was quelled when he met Jiraiya, who gave him a new goal in life: to protect his friends. However, when Danzo teamed up with Hanzō and forced him to kill Yahiko, Nagato realized that his goal was worthless, and hated Konoha even more, to the point of losing his affections for Jiraiya.
Nonetheless, he was seen to be quite respectful, particularly to the fallen and the dead. Given the Akatsuki members' frequent bickering, he often restrained them, and encouraged better relations among members. He even suggested that they mourn for Deidara after his passing, and reprimanded Kisame for calling Hidan and Kakuzu the "Zombie Brothers". After his battle with Jiraiya, he held a moment of silence for his former teacher, out of respect for his power.
Pain was also very respectful and kind to his childhood friend, Konan, who he claimed to be his "angel" in Amegakure. He was shown protecting her, without request or hesitation, from Jiraiya, before his battle with his former teacher. Apparently, she was the only Akatsuki member that addressed him by his names, Pain and Nagato.
Background: During the war in Amegakure, two Konoha shinobi broke into Nagato's house looking for food, thinking that the house had been abandoned. His parents, believing they were going to be killed, attacked the two strangers so Nagato could escape. Thinking that they were enemy ninja, the Konoha shinobi killed Nagato's parents, prompting Nagato to awaken his Rinnegan and dispose of the intruders. He would come to consider this incident the first great pain of his life.[2]
Having no-one left to call family, Nagato left his home after burying his parents, and began wandering aimlessly with nothing but a few supplies, along with meeting and befriending a stray dog, which he named 'Chibi'. He later grouped up with fellow orphans, Konan and Yahiko, and they looked after each other.[3] One day, the three friends got caught in the crossfire of a battle between the Legendary Sannin and Hanzō, resulting in Chibi dying in Nagato's arms. This infuriated Yahiko, to the point of declaring that he would become a god to stop all madness, which eventually became Nagato's desire.
After the Great War ended, Nagato and his friends met the Sannin, who at first were less than willing to help them. Orochimaru even suggested to kill them, as they were orphans of war, and as such would only live their lives full of misery. Jiraiya, on the other hand, decided that he would take care of them, to compensate for what the Sannin did.
One night, at dinner, Nagato cried because eating together with his master and friends reminded him of his family. Later that night, he ran away with Yahiko. The two were attacked by an Iwagakure chunin, who injured Yahiko. To his horror, Nagato activated his Rinnegan, and killed the ninja. When Jiraiya found out about this, he decided to train them in ninjutsu.[4] Nagato was very emotional about killing the ninja, and asked Jiraiya for help so he could protect Konan and Yahiko. Jiraiya's response was for Nagato to grow up. He also revealed the truth behind Nagato's Rinnegan: that his eyes might be the key to finding the peace they both desired for the world.
After three years, Jiraiya felt they were strong enough to fend for themselves, so he began to head home. Jiraiya believed Nagato to have later died with the other orphans under unexplained circumstances,[5] but had told Konan that, whenever their names were mentioned outside their village, it was always about someone being killed when they opposed them.
In truth, Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko began a quest to find the peace that they desired, just as Jiraiya had done. While becoming full-fledged Rain ninja, they followed their own path, and began gathering several supporters, with Yahiko as their leader. Unfortunately, then Amegakure leader, Hanzō, viewed Yahiko's gang as a threat to his position as leader and schemed with Danzo and Konoha's Foundation to eliminate them. Luring Yahiko's group into a trap under the guise of three-way peace talks with the Land of Fire, Land of Wind, and Land of Earth, Hanzō took Konan hostage, and used her life as a bargaining chip to try and force Nagato to kill Yahiko. Faced with a horrible decision, and with both Konan and Yahiko showing their willingness to die for the sake of the other, Nagato struggled with himself, until Yahiko physically forced Nagato to kill him by placing the kunai in his hand and guiding it. With Yahiko's dying breath, he told Nagato to survive, because he believed in Jiraiya's words that Nagato would become the world's saviour. This would become the second great pain of Nagato's life.
After Yahiko's death, Hanzō ordered his shinobi to kill Nagato as well, but Nagato managed to unleash his Shinra Tensei to repel their kunai. As Nagato rescued Konan, Hanzō captured him with exploding tags, severely burning his legs and hands in the resulting explosion. However, Nagato continued to hold his ground, and returned Konan to safety, telling her to take hold of Yahiko's body. Nagato then performed Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, despite Konan's pleas, and used the Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming Seal statue to decimate both Hanzō and Danzo's forces. The technique didn't kill Hanzō and Danzo, as they were able to flee. However, it left Nagato emaciated, with numerous chakra rods embedded in his back, which, along with the injuries from the explosion, seemed to necessitate his future use of a robotic transport. Leadership of the gang passed on to Nagato as he scratched through the symbol of his Amegakure forehead protector, presumably indicating both the origin of the rebellion that would lead to civil war, and the beginning of his teaching of enlightenment through pain.
Upon adopting the alias "Pain", Nagato led the rebelling forces in the Amegakure civil war, and took control of the village by assassinating Hanzō, then solidified his leadership by systematically killing anyone who had direct ties to the former leader. The members of Pain's faction then wore their forehead protectors with scratches through them (a practice shared by the members of Akatsuki), to symbolize their rebellion, and continued to wear them even after gaining control of the country, despite no longer being rogue ninja, to symbolize their victory in the conflict.
Hunt for Uchiha In the Shippūden anime, Pain was first introduced, in person, in Orochimaru's flashbacks, when Deva path welcomed Itachi Uchiha as a new member of Akatsuki.
Years later, before Sasuke battled Itachi, Pain encountered his former master, Jiraiya, as the latter tried to infiltrate Amegakure, putting a short halt to the Akatsuki leader's attempts to hunt down the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's jinchūriki, Naruto Uzumaki, in Konoha. Pain used the Animal path in order to deal with his old master. During the first half of his battle with Jiraiya, Pain fought the Sannin off with unique summons. It wasn't until Jiraiya activated his Sage Mode and summoned Shima and Fukasaku to help him fight that Pain revealed two more of his bodies (the Preta path and the Human path) and quickly began to overwhelm Jiraiya. Jiraiya brought down all three of the bodies by using the toad elders to perform a powerful genjutsu, and then pierced each body through the heart with a sword.
When Jiraiya prepared to head back to Konoha, Pain introduced his Asura path, and struck Jiraiya, severing his left arm. When Jiraiya looked back up, he witnessed all of Pain's six paths standing above, who attacked him together. However, Jiraiya did manage to incapacitate the Animal path, and sent it to Konoha through a toad. In his attempt to learn more about Pain, he was pummelled by the remaining five bodies, and his throat was crushed. Jiraiya then died, sinking into the watery depths of the battlefield, but not before encrypting a coded message on Fukasaku's back with his chakra about Pain's real identity, who managed to escape.

| Invasion of Pein: After finding a replacement for the Animal path, Pain and his partner, Konan set out for Konoha to capture Naruto under the orders of the real Akatsuki leader, Madara Uchiha. They eliminated the border guards upon arrival, infiltrated the village, and dispersed, with each of the six paths having a specific task: the Asura, Preta, and Animal paths served as diversions, while the Deva, Human, and Naraka paths took part in reconnaissance, with Konan aiding the latter team. While exploring and destroying the village, Deva path was confronted by Kakashi Hatake. The Asura path came to its aid, but was destroyed by Choza and Choji Akimichi. However, Kakashi ultimately died of using the last reserves of his chakra with the Kamui to save Choji from a still-living Asura path's missiles, and the other Konoha ninja were defeated by Deva path.
In other locations across the village, the other paths were drawn into battle as well. The Preta path, while trying to dispose of the captured, former Animal path, was attacked by Kiba Inuzuka, Tsume Inuzuka, and their dogs. Meanwhile, the Naraka path, who was interrogating other Konoha shinobi to find out Naruto's location, was challenged, and seemingly incapacitated, by Konohamaru's Rasengan. Elsewhere, the new Animal path decimated an ANBU building, where a captured Amegakure ninja's mind was being unravelled by Inoichi Yamanaka's mind reading abilities. As for the Human path, it used its own mind-reading powers on Shizune to find out that Naruto was actually training for Sage Mode on Myobokuzan, and then killed Shizune by ripping out her soul.
Later, the Deva path met with Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage. Tsunade refused to tell it about Naruto's whereabouts, and rejected its philosophy of pain and peace in the world. However, after finding out about Naruto from the Human path through their mind connection, the Deva path destroyed the village with a massive Shinra Tensei to counter Tsunade's arguments about pain, while Konan and the rest of the bodies evacuated from their current location. The Naraka path resurrected a destroyed Asura path, and the other bodies caught up with the Deva path at the center of the destroyed village. At that moment, Naruto returned to Konoha from his senjutsu training with his toad allies, only to find his village destroyed by Pain.
When a weakened Tsunade arrived before Pain to seek revenge and fight it, the Asura path attacked her, but was quickly destroyed by Naruto's Rasengan. Naruto then had Gamakichi escort Tsunade to a safe place, while he volunteered to fight the remaining five bodies of Pain, instructing the rest of the villagers not to interfere.
The Animal path summoned its ram, rhino, and multi-headed dog to attack Naruto, but the latter parried all attacks with the benefits of his Sage Mode, and left their defeat to his toad allies. After this, Naruto destroyed the Preta path and the Human path with his perfected Wind Release: Rasenshuriken. Consecutively, Gamabunta swallowed the Animal path, along with Naruto, in his mouth, where the latter was able to finish it off without interference by using the Rasenrengan.
Naruto then tried to defeat the Deva and Naraka paths with another Rasenshuriken, only for the Preta path to reappear and absorb the attack. Realizing that the Naraka path was the key to the Preta path's revival, Naruto focused his efforts on getting rid of it first. Although he succeeded in destroying the Naraka path, the Deva path, after being left temporarily powerless in destroying Konoha, regained its gravity-manipulating abilities, and captured Naruto using the Preta path. As the Preta path tried to grab and absorb Naruto's chakra, Naruto started gathering excessive amounts of natural energy in his still position, which was inadvertently absorbed by the Preta path, turning it into a toad statue. Naruto broke free, only to be captured again by the Deva path, who restrained him with its Chakra Disruption Blades. The Deva path then lectured Naruto about the chain of hatred, pain, suffering and war that the ninja system brought to the world, and how it planned to use the tailed beasts' power to achieve peace and end conflict. During this confrontation, Pain's real body, Nagato, was revealed to have been controlling Deva path from a distance.
Nagato transmitting his chakra to control the Six Paths of Pain. With Naruto no longer able to fight back, his allies came to aid him. Pain killed Fukasaku with one of his blades. Later, Hinata Hyuga, who confessed her love for Naruto, drew herself into a short battle with the Deva path, who injured her badly. Hinata's defeat prompted Naruto to enter his six-tailed transformation, which the Deva path was unable to compete with in its current condition. With this epiphany, the Deva path retreated to a location closer to Nagato. This allowed the Deva path to use its most powerful technique, the Chibaku Tensei, to capture the six-tailed Naruto, which led to a short-lived victory, until Naruto progressed to an eight-tailed state, and broke out of the Chibaku Tensei sphere. The sphere of rubble created by the Chibaku Tensei crumbled, and Naruto, having later receded to his normal form, emerged from its remains.
With his resolve renewed, Naruto demanded to be taken to Nagato, to speak with him himself. The Deva path, however, stated that, although Naruto now understood true pain, they could never understand each other, as they were just too different. As the Deva path attacked, Naruto broke off a piece of one of its chakra blades, and located Nagato by stabbing himself in the shoulder with it. Naruto then battled the Deva path by throwing two Rasenshurikens in a shadow shuriken method, though the Deva path dodged both of them. In the ensuing chaos, Naruto was able to amass enough shadow clones to resist the Deva path's Shinra Tensei, and was able to hit a final blow on it with a Rasengan. Sensing that the last of his bodies had been defeated, Nagato figured that Naruto would soon track him down. When Naruto finally found him, Nagato informed Konan to stand aside and let Naruto in. He then sarcastically stated that "peace had arrived".
Upon his arrival, Nagato attempted to control Naruto by striking him with one of his chakra blades, but Naruto managed to resist it with the Demon Fox-augmented Sage Mode. Naruto admitted his anger towards Nagato, but held his ground, and asked Nagato how he became to be, despite being a student of Jiraiya. Nagato decided to tell Naruto about his past, recalling his two great sources of pain, the deaths of his parents, and of his friend Yahiko. After discussing his past, Nagato asked Naruto to give him the answer that he had promised earlier. Naruto answered him with a combination of both Nagato's and Jiraiya's plans to achieve peace, greatly confusing Nagato. Nagato became even more shocked as Naruto "broke the cycle of hatred" by deciding not to kill Nagato, despite his hatred towards him.
Calling that vision of peace a fantasy, Nagato berated Naruto and Jiraiya on their vision of peace. Naruto replied with a line from The Legend of the Gutsy Ninja, which Nagato read after Jiraiya left the Ame Orphans. Naruto declared he would become Hokage to break the end of the suffering of Konoha and Amegakure, and pleaded with Nagato to believe in him, as Jiraiya had once believed in him. Questioning himself, Nagato remembered how Jiraiya had had high hopes for him, and remarked how Naruto reminded him of himself. He then removed his arms from the support machine to perform a final hand seal, stating that he would also believe in Naruto.
Nagato used the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, and revived all the people of Konoha that had been killed during his invasion. As he had used all of his chakra, a severely weakened Nagato died, after entrusting Naruto to find the answer to peace and pain in the world. Following a series of unexpected events, Konan shed the origami tree that she had created to hide Nagato, and wrapped up the dead bodies of Nagato and Yahiko, to take them with her. Fortunately, Konan revealed that she was through with Akatsuki, as Nagato and Yahiko had meant everything to her, and, as Nagato believed in him, she would also believe in Naruto. After Naruto accepted Nagato as a "fellow pupil", she gave him a bouquet of origami flowers, as a memento of the three Ame orphans, and headed out to Amegakure. Just before she left, Konan said that Amegakure would help Naruto to make his dream come true, perhaps implying that she would attempt to take over leadership of Amegakure in place of Nagato, as she had already been declared as "God's angel" in the village.
Abilities: As the leader of Akatsuki, and one of the two sides of the Amegakure Civil War, Nagato was an extraordinarily powerful shinobi, who could easily be considered to be Kage-level, maybe even higher. His partner, Konan, had stated that he had never lost a single battle, but it wasn't until his fight with Naruto that he encountered an opponent capable of defeating him.[7] He was also able to single-handedly defeat and overthrow the former Amegakure leader, Hanzō, and made short work of Jiraiya after unveiling all six of his bodies (though he admitted that killing Jiraiya would have been very unlikely had Jiraiya had prior knowledge of his six separate bodies).
Rin'Negan: The Rinnegan (輪廻眼; Literally meaning "Samsara Eye") is the most revered and, according to Fukasaku, the most powerful of all the three great dōjutsu. Jiraiya, too, acknowledged that the Rinnegan is "without question, the most powerful" of the three. Although a Kekkei Genkai like the Hyuga Clan's Byakugan and Uchiha Clan's Sharingan, it seems to be by far the most rarely occurring of the three, as there have been only two known Rinnegan users: the Sage of the Six Paths and Nagato. With the Sage presumably long deceased and with Nagato now dead, there are currently no confirmed Rinnegan users alive at this point. The doujutsu's occurence is so rare that Jiraiya once believed its existence was only a legend. The Rinnegan is characterized by a ripple-like pattern around the pupil, with a grayish-purple iris and sclera. In addition to enabling the user to quickly master various jutsu, the user may also use all forms of chakra nature manipulation, it also allows the user to use all of the six paths techniques[1]. Like the Sharingan and the Byakugan, the Rinnegan also allows the user to see chakra, including an otherwise hidden barrier. According to Nagato's partner Konan, the possesser of the Rinnegan is the seventh path of Pain, who is "beyond life and death", and can use the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, which allows the Rinnegan user to revive all people who have died recently.
Because Nagato's Six Paths of Pain were all reanimated corpses, their Rinnegan was added to their bodies by Nagato through some unknown means. By doing so, Nagato could see each individual body's field of vision, coordinating the bodies with extremely precise planning, even during battles. Due to this effect, unlike the Byakugan, the Rinnegan does not have a blind spot, as long as the bodies are looking in every direction or at least one body is looking at the desired target. Because of this advantage, an opponent must blind one body, or distract all others in order for a blind spot to be opened. The animals summoned by the Animal path also had Rinnegan eyes, suggesting that Nagato controlled them as well.
Six Paths: Six Paths of Pain (ペイン六道, Pein Rikudō) Type: Kekkei Genkai User: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime): Naruto Shippuden Episode 114 Debut (Manga): Chapter 363 The Six Paths of Pain was a jutsu used by Nagato, and served as his representation in his group, Akatsuki.
This jutsu was, by far, Nagato's most powerful and most-used technique. It allowed Nagato to control six separate bodies as though they were his own. Each of these bodies were reanimated corpses that were both kept mobile by, and made use of Nagato's chakra. While controlling them, Nagato used the alias "Pain", yet still regarded them as separate from himself.[1] All the six paths were eventually destroyed by Naruto Uzumaki during the Invasion of Pain arc.

| Deva path (天道, Tendō) Type: Kekkei Genkai User: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime): Shippuden Episode 114 Debut (Manga): Chapter 363 The Deva path (天道, Tendō), Pain's first observed body, was the body of Yahiko in the Six Paths of Pain. It was the most-seen and used of the six paths, and acted as Nagato's representative during sealings. Its main abilities revolved around manipulating gravity, allowing it to repel or attract objects. The Deva path was permanently incapacitated after its chakra recievers were removed from its body, following Pain's defeat by Naruto Uzumaki. Konan took this body along with Nagato's body after he died and returned them to Amegakure. Abilities: The Deva path's main abilities revolved around manipulating gravity, allowing it to repel or attract objects or persons. However, it could not perform these techniques in rapid succession, leaving it vulnerable for a short period of time after their use. This period of time between usages varied from five seconds to several minutes, depending upon the force of the repulsion or attraction that Deva path used.[1][2][3] When performing a large scale attack, Nagato had to first sever his connections with the other paths, and employ his chakra only to Deva path for the attack. Deva path's most powerful technique allowed it to release a black orb of energy in the atmosphere that could attract all the land, matter and objects underneath it to form a giant make-shift terrestrial body. In addition to gravity manipulation, Deva path could use a number of other miscellaneous jutsu, something none of the other bodies had been seen doing. It could use the Shapeshifting Technique to make body doubles of others with human sacrifices. It could also control rain, a possible throwback to Yahiko (who wanted to be able to stop the rain in Amegakure), which even allowed him to sense the chakra of everyone in Amegakure, making sneak-ins by enemies nearly impossible. Another chief ability of the Deva path included the Sealing Technique: Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming Seals, that Akatsuki used to seal the tailed beasts. The members convened to forcibly extract the beast from its host's body over a three day period and store it in a giant statue. He was not the only one who could use this technique. Madara Uchiha (as Tobi) and the remaining Akatsuki members have been shown to initiate the extraction without Deva path when it was invading Konoha. Deva's Jutsu: Banshō Ten'in (万象天引) Type: Kekkei genkai, Supplementary User: Pain (Deva path) Debut (Manga) Chapter 434 Banshō Ten'in is a technique similar to Shinra Tensei in that it manipulates gravity at the users will, however instead of pushing objects away, it draws them close. It is unknown if it can be used in a similar scale as Shinra Tensei or if it has the same five second limit. Chibaku Tensei (地爆天星, Heavenly Star Bursting from the Earth) Type: Offensive, Defensive, Supplementary, Long range (10m+) Users: Deva path, Sage of the Six Paths Debut (Manga): Chapter 439 Using Deva path, Nagato creates a dark black sphere of gravity that is thrown into the sky. The surrounding earth, including forests and mountains, is collected into a single point, piling on top of one another until it creates a large sphere. A large crater is left where the earth was collected from. Pain notes that the Sage of the Six Paths had mastered this technique to an extent that he created the moon itself, and that his version paled in comparison to it. Despite its admitted inferiority, it was still strong enough to both hold out against Naruto's Six-Tailed Fox Menacing Ball and incapacitate Naruto and trap him in his six-tailed transformation. Although, it failed to contain Naruto when he slipped into his eight-tailed transformation. The Deva path must be brought within close range of Nagato before it can use the technique, and performing it puts a great strain on Nagato. Fierce Raining at Will (雨虎自在の術, Ukojizai no Jutsu) Nagato's Deva path controling the rain in AmegakureType: No rank, Supplementary, All ranges[1] User: Nagato (Deva path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 368 With this jutsu, Pain can blanket a wide area with a downpour of rain. He can maintain a connection to the rain and tell when someone is obstructing it. This also allows him to detect the individual's chakra level and skill, thus making a powerful ninja's infiltration of Amegakure an impossible task. Pain makes it rain every week on Sunday, except when he has important matters to attend to outside the village. Shinra Tensei (神羅天征) Type: Kekkei Genkai, Supplementary Users: Nagato (Pain (Deva path)) Debut (Manga) Chapter 420 Shinra Tensei is the ability to manipulate gravity to repulse matter away from the user, with such force that it can easily shatter stone. By using this technique as a defensive measure, most, if not all, attacks directed to the user will be deflected, no matter the size or mass. The only downside to this technique is that there is a short period when it is unusable after being used, though only for roughly five seconds. If one is sufficiently rooted to the ground, the repulsive forces can be resisted. Shinra Tensei can also be used on a large scale for massive destruction. Before it can be used, Nagato must break his connection with all but the Deva path (presumably to channel all available chakra through it). A massive gravity well is created above the target, crushing everything beneath in a titanic explosion. Using it on this scale shorten Nagato's lifespan and leaves him unable to use the Deva path for several minutes. Shapeshifting Technique (象転の術, Shōten no Jutsu; Viz "Impersonation Jutsu") Type: No rank, Supplementary, All ranges[1] User: Pain (Deva path) Debut (Anime): Shippūden Episode 15 Debut (Manga): Chapter 255 This technique allows Pain to turn a human sacrifice into an exact copy of someone else, with all of their abilities, weapons, strength, memories, and personality. The original can control the copy remotely until the copy is killed, at which point the copy returns to their original appearance. The original must give a percentage of their chakra to the copy when it is created, and are then limited by that amount when the copy uses jutsu. This technique was used on Yura and Mukade and transformed them into Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki respectively. Sealing Technique: Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming Seals (封印術・幻龍九封尽, Fūinjutsu: Genryū Kyū Fūjin; English TV "Sealing Jutsu: Nine Phantom Dragons") Type: S-rank, Supplementary[1] User: Pain (Deva path) Hand Seals: Tiger, Snake, Rat, Ox, Dog, Ram Debut (Anime): Shippūden Episode 10 Debut (Manga): Chapter 255 This jutsu is used by Pain and the other members of Akatsuki to forcibly drain the spirit and chakra of the Tailed Beasts from their still-living Jinchūriki, then seal it in what appears to be the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The jutsu takes three full days to complete if nine of the Akatsuki members are present. Kisame Hoshigaki comments that it "takes longer without Orochimaru". Zetsu also claimed that with so few people left to perform the jutsu, it would take a while.[2] To prepare for the jutsu, Pain summons the sealing statue and each member stands on one of its fingers, corresponding to their specific ring finger. When performed, this jutsu causes the bit to fall out of the mouth of the statue. Each of the Akatsuki members concentrates, causing the kanji of their rings to appear on the nail of the finger they're standing on. Nine dragon-like effigies then pour from the statue's mouth, surround the captured host, and remove the Tailed Beast from them (the process seems quite agonizing to the host). In the case of an unsealed Tailed Beast, the same thing happens to the beast itself, and still takes as much time as if it were sealed. After the process is complete, the beast is sealed within the statue, and one of the statue's nine eyes opens. The host then dies because of the removal of their Tailed Beast. The beasts must be sealed in a specific order with the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox being sealed last, or the statue would shatter.[3] Apparently, it seems that the rest of Akatsuki can still perform this jutsu, even without Pain being present.[2] However, with Nagato now dead, Madara claimed that they need a new pawn to synchronize with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path in order to seal the Eight and Nine Tailed Beasts.[4] Mirrored Sudden Attacker Technique (鏡面襲者の術, Kyōmen Shūja no Jutsu) Type: A-rank, Offensive, Short range (0-5m)[1] User: Pain Debut (Anime): Shippūden Episode 18 Debut (Manga): Chapter 263 This technique is automatically activated when the "Forbidden" (禁, kin) tags creating the Five Seals Barrier are removed. An exact copy of the person who removed the tag will appear from the nearby ground and attack. From appearance to battle skill, everything is copied perfectly. The only difference is that the copy has a fixed amount of stamina, giving it an advantage in a drawn-out battle. Magic Lantern Body Technique (幻灯身の術, Gentōshin no Jutsu) Type: No rank, Supplementary, All ranges[1] User: Pain Debut (Anime): Naruto Episode 135 Debut (Manga): Chapter 238 With this technique, Pain can convene the members of Akatsuki, even while the various members are in completely different parts of the world. The individual members sit down and turn their thought waves into chakra. These thought waves are then received by Pain, amplified, and then broadcast through virtual images of the respective members. This allows them to have conversations and perform the Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming Seals. These virtual images look like the member they represent, only standing up with their hands in a seal. The images are also transparent, save for the eyes. In the anime, the images are depicted refracting an array of spectral colors, much like a rainbow. In the anime, their bodies will also distort and flicker, as if receiving electronic interference. Also, in the Japanese version of the anime, their voices are also altered, though this is removed in the English version. These virtual images are not simple reflections of the members, though, as the members can still use varying jutsu while Pain is relaying their thoughts. | |

| Preta path (餓鬼道, Gakidō) Type: Kekkei Genkai User: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime): Debut (Manga): Chapter 376 Pain's Preta pathThe Preta path (餓鬼道, Gakidō) was one of Nagato's bodies in the Six Paths of Pain. It was the body of a large, bulky man, formerly of Kusagakure, who was incapacitated during Pain's invasion of Konoha, when it absorbed too much of Naruto Uzumaki's senjutsu chakra and turned into a toad statue. This body's "Energy Absorption" ability was its primary use for Nagato during a battle, since it was capable of absorbing any ninjutsu-related technique, thereby nullifying its effect. Abilities: This path's "Energy Absorption" ability was primarily defensive, since it was capable of absorbing any ninjutsu-related technique, thereby nullifying its effect. This technique could also take the form of a large bubble around its body, allowing it to absorb attacks from all directions. In addition to its defensive properties, this body's ability had also shown offensive capabilities, as it could absorb all the chakra out of any person that it touched or grabbed. However, this path seemed to be weak against physical attacks, as one punch to the face (albeit, imbued with natural energy) was enough to kill it for the first time. The force from the punch most likely snapped the body's neck. After being revived by the Naraka path, Preta path was later finally incapacitated by Naruto, when, after he was tightly held by Preta path, therefore absorbing all of his chakra, Naruto started gathering natural energy from the surroundings, and Preta path, having absorbed too much of the energy, turned into a statue of a toad. Jutsu:Chakra Absorption Technique (チャクラ吸引術, Chakra Kyūin Jutsu) Type: Special ability Users: Yoroi Akado, Jirobo, Pain (Preta path) Debut (Anime): Naruto Episode 39 Debut (Manga): Chapter 67 The Chakra Absorption Technique allows the user to absorb the physical and spiritual energy of an opponent. The user can absorb all of the opponent's chakra, causing death and also granting the user much more power. In the anime, it has been shown that stored-up energy can also be released in the form of a shock wave. The user doesn't have to actually touch the opponent, since it is also possible to use it through other media, as Jirobo did with his Earth Release Barrier: Earth Prison Dome of Magnificent Nothingness. The only necessary condition is some medium through which chakra can be channeled. It is unknown if this technique is truly considered a jutsu or not since it has never been given an entry in any of the data books; however, it is not considered a kekkei genkai ability either, as it has been performed by two people with no known relation. Most likely, the technique is simply an effect of other jutsu, as so far only Yoroi Akado uses a plain chakra absorption technique, while Jirobo and Pain's chakra absorption abilities are effects of entirely different techniques all together. Blocking Technique Absorption Seal (封術吸印, Fūjutsu Kyūin) Type: No rank, Defensive, Short range (0-5m)[1] User: Pain (Preta path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 377 A highly advanced sealing technique that is capable of absorbing any chakra, regardless of any spacial or nature transformation, and dispersing it within one's body by spinning the chakra within one's body in the opposite direction. As a result, this technique can absorb any ninjutsu technique, regardless of power, without harming the user. This technique also has an offensive use. Should the user get close enough to grab the opponent, the barrier can absorb chakra right out of an individual's body, effectively draining them (a la the Chakra Absorption Technique). | |

| Human path (人間道, Ningendō) Type: Kekkei Genkai User: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime): Debut (Manga): Chapter 376 Pain's Human pathThe Human path (人間道, Ningendō) was one of the bodies in Nagato's Six Paths of Pain. It was the body of a tall, slender man with very long loose hair, who originally hailed from Takigakure. It was entirely obliterated by Naruto Uzumaki's Wind Release: Rasenshuriken during Pain's invasion of Konoha. Besides above-average taijutsu skills, Human path was shown to have mind-tampering abilities. It could read other people's minds, and even rip out one's soul, subsequently killing the victim. Abilities: The Human path was initially shown to have great taijutsu and hand-to-hand combat skills, as even after having it's eyes damaged by Jiraiya in battle, it could hold it's own against a great ninja like him, using only physical attacks. However, the Human path was later shown to have the capability of mind reading simply by placing it's hand over the target's head, and could extort any information or secret being hidden by the victim against his/her will. The most powerful and lethal ability possessed by the Human path was it's power to remove it's target's soul, by ripping it out of his/her body, thus killing the victim. During it's battle against Naruto, the Human path was destroyed by the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken, as it was unable to escape Naruto's attack because it was getting the Animal path to safety. Jutsu:Mind Reading (Shintei) Type: Unknown rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m) Users: Yamanaka clan, Pain (Human path), Shimon Hijiri By placing a hand on the target's head, the user will be able to enter the target's subconscious and extract any information needed, even if the target has forgotten it himself or has had it blocked. The Yamanaka clan has to use special machines and the assistance of other ninja to enter the person's mind, while Pain was able to do so by simply grabbing the top of their head. Memories that have mental blocks on them will require longer periods of time to probe through and obtain. Sould Removal (Konjin) Type: Unknown User: Pain (Human path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 419 After the Human path is done reading a target's mind, it apparently rips the victim's consciousness (i.e. soul) out of them, killing them. Soul Grasp (Rōkon) Type: Unknown User: Pain (Human path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 419 The human path places his hand over the targets head, and his soul begins to branch off, going inside the target. Human path's soul hand enters the targets body, causing severe pain as he inflicts damage straight to there soul. This move was used by Pain on Shizune before he ripped her soul out.

| Asura path (修羅道, Shuradō) Type: Kekkei Genkai Users: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime):N/A Debut (Manga): Chapter 379 Pain's Asura pathThe Asura path (修羅道, Shuradō) was a body in Nagato's Six Paths of Pain. It was the body of a tall, bald man with a very unusual body shape, like having a thick neck and no ears. It was destroyed twice during Pain's invasion of Konoha: first by Kakashi Hatake, and after it was revived by Naraka path, by Naruto Uzumaki's senjutsu-augmented Rasengan. This body had received a number of body alterations. Under it's cloak, the body was revealed to have completely android-like inner workings, possessing six arms and a folded serrated blade-like tail. Several of it's arms could be detached and used as weapons. Abilities: This body was very different from all other paths, being more like a robotic android, as it had a number of body alterations. It had robotic inner workings, possessing six arms and a folded serrated blade-like tail. It could fire one of his left forearms off as a long-range projectile, and pull out his arms to reveal and fire a cluster of segmented missiles at it's targets. It could quickly propel itself forward with a burst of chakra from it's boots, and could protract multiple blades and a drill from one of it's arms in battle. Also, it could open up the crown of it's head to release a titanic shockwave that could destroy numerous buildings at once. It had a long and flexible saw-like blade wrapped around it's waist that could be used to slice it's target. All of these abilities befitted the "warring demon" name that the Asura path held, while giving it a considerably higher degree of versatility than the other paths had. The Asura path was used as a shield to protect the Deva path from Kakashi Hatake. It survived Kakashi's Lightning Clone Technique, but was later destroyed by Choza and Choji Akimichi. After the Naraka path resurrects it using the King of Hell, it was finally destroyed by Naruto with the Rasengan, also being the first path to be incapacitated by him. Jutsu: Flaming Arrow of Amazing Ability (怪腕ノ火矢, Kaiwan no Hiya) Type: No rank, Offensive, All ranges[1] User: Pain (Asura path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 383 The Asura path detachs and fire its hand like a rocket. Upon focusing chakra to the wrist, the hand will be launched towards the target. This chakra will also act like a magnet, to draw the hand back for reattachment. The chakra also functions to protect the hand, allowing its powerful strike to severely damage rock, but not the hand itself. Flaming Arrow Missle (Kaiwandan) Type: Unknown, Offensive User: Pain (Asura path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 419 The Asura path pulls out its hand, which is revealed to be connected to the arm by a thick cord with missiles attached to it. The missiles then can be launched, causing massive explosions. These missiles can also come out of the Asura path's body, and launched at the opponents directly. Laser Explosion (Gele Baku) Type: Unknown rank, Offensive User: Pain (Asura path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 420 The Asura path opens the top of its head, revealing a cannon of sorts. The cannon then releases a massive blast of chakra in the form of a laser, causing a powerful explosion that devastates the surrounding area. Chakra Propulsion Boots (Chakra no Ugai) Type: Unknown, Supplementary User: Pain (Asura path) An unnamed technique used by Pain's Asura path. The Asura path utilizes chakra that shoots out of his boots to propel himself in a linear direction, greatly increasing his speed. Large Poison Blade Tail (Taihōdoku no Kenjū) Type: Unknown, Supplementary User: Pain (Asura Path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 422 A unnamed technique used by pains asura path. The Asura path is able to produce a large grass like bladed tail which is covered in a poison acid on it. This was seen as kakashi came at Deva path by force when Deva path used Bansho Ten'in, Kakashi's clone was impaled by the tail.

| Naraka path (地獄道, Jigokudō) Type: Kekkei Genkai User: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime): Debut (Manga): Chapter 379 Pain's Naraka pathThe Naraka path (地獄道, Jigokudō) was one of the bodies in Nagato's Six Paths of Pain. It was the body of a tall, stocky, muscular man with a spiky mop of hair. It was incapacitated by Naruto Uzumaki's Sage Technique: Rasenrengan in a surprise attack from above, during Pain's invasion of Konoha. Naraka path's main ability was the use of the King of Hell, which was a large head of a demonic being, sprouting out of the ground and surrounded by black flames. It was very useful in interrogation for Naraka path, as if somebody captured by this ability would to tell a lie, then he/she would be killed. Also, the King of Hell could repair or resurrect other paths of Pain, that had been destroyed or damaged in battle. Abilities: In terms of physique, the Naraka path was perhaps the most intimidating of all the paths. However, it's greatest capabilities were spiritualistic, and not physical attacks. The basic (and the only) ability exhibited by Naraka path lay in the use of a demonic being, which was dubbed as the "King of Hell", which was a large head sprouting out of the ground surrounded by black flames and possessing Nagato's Rinnegan eyes.[1] The "King of Hell" was basically used by Naraka path for two purposes, out of which one was interrogation. When Naraka path would have caught hold of a person and asked him/her a question, after an answer was given by the target, the King of Hell's mouth would open to release tendril-like arms that force out the life force of the victim from his/her mouth. If the person would have had lied to Naraka path, or refused to answer it's questions, then the King of Hell would remove their life force and eat it, thereby seemingly killing the target(s). However, if a person would have had told the truth to Naraka path, he/she would remain alive, though left extremely exhausted. Also, only those persons who were caught by Naraka path were able to see the King of Hell, and it was essentially invisible to other people,[2] although, Naruto could apparently see it, while he was in Sage Mode. The second ability of the King of Hell was resurrecting other people. It could do so by ingesting any part of the deceased person's body with the tendril-like arms from it's mouth, and then after some time, the dead person would emerge from it's mouth, completely restored and healed. At all times when Pain's bodies were shown in a combat formation, the Naraka path was always ordered to take a rear position with the others protecting it, behind even the Deva path, while it's own power was still recharging. This was because like the Deva path, the Naraka path is one of Pain's most important bodies, due to it's power to repair and resurrect other paths, while in battle. This idea of Pain's battle formation was cracked by Naruto, who tricked all paths of Pain to eventually destroy the Naraka path in a surprise attack from above with his Sage Technique: Rasenrengan. Jutsu:King of Hell (Ma no Naraku) Type: Unknown rank, Offensive, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m) User: Pain (Naraka path) Debut (Manga): Chapter 422 King of Hell is a technique that summons a giant demonic figure with the apparent use of interrogation. It is capable of discerning whether an individual is lying or not. When implemented on a target, a serpent-like apparition emerges from their mouth and it is consumed by the figure. If they are lying (or refuse to answer the question), their life force energy is taken and they die. If the target is telling the truth, they don't die, though they're left extremely exhausted. When the Naraka path uses this technique, the figure possesses the Rinnegan eyes similar to how the Animal path's summons all possess the Rinnegan. The King of Hell can only be seen by the ones it's being used upon. As a secondary ability, the King of Hell can restore the bodies of whatever it eats. When it consumed the remains of the Asura path, the Path emerged from the figure fully restored and is even wearing new Akatsuki robe (the body had discarded its previous robe). Once Naraka path uses this technique, he needs time to recharge and possibly cannot use King of Hell at all. While the King of Hell is being used for revival purposes, it seems that others are able to see it, unlike when it is being used for interrogation purpose. However, it was Naruto in Sage Mode that was able to see it, so it is possible that normal people cannot, even for revival. The King of Hell can be summoned when the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique is used, where Nagato can release the souls of people who were recently killed. | |

| Animal path (畜生道, Chikushōdō) Type: Kekkei Genkai User: Nagato Hand Seals: None Debut (Anime): Debut (Manga): Chapter 407 Pain's second Animal pathThe Animal path (畜生道, Chikushōdō) is Pain's newest body and the replacement of the body lost in the fight against Jiraiya. This body has a very young appearance and, unlike all the other bodies, was originally female. This Animal path was incapacitated after being hit in the chest with Naruto's Sage Technique: Rasenrengan. Like the previous Animal path, this body was capable of many summons, but possessed few other skills. Abilities:Jutsu:Summoning Technique Giant Drill-Beaked Bird Giant Multi-Headed Dog Giant Panda Giant Ram Giant Rhino Giant Crustacean Giant Centipede Giant Snake-Tailed Chameleon Gaint Boar Gaint Multi-Armed Ape Deva path Human path Preta path Asura path Naraka path Water Release: Violent Bubble Wave (泡沫烈波, Suiton: Hōmatsu Rappa) Type: C-rank, Offensive, Supplementary, All Ranges[1] User: Giant Crustacean Debut {Manga): Chapter 374 The giant crustacean expels a huge wave of bubbles from its mouth that is capable of washing away most attacks, such as oil and fire. It is also effective as a smokescreen Amplification Summoning Technique (増幅口寄せの術, Zōfuku Kuchiyose no Jutsu) Type: B-rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m)[1] User: Giant Multi-Headed Dog Debut (Manga): Chapter 375 Upon being struck by a direct attack, the canine can divide into another identical beast and increase its power. The beast can then recombine if needed, with one body carrying the heads of however many additional beasts were created. Body Replacement Technique (変わり身の術, Kawarimi no Jutsu; English TV "Substitution Jutsu") Type: E-rank, Supplementary[1] Users: All Ninja Academy graduates Hand Seals: Ram, Boar, Ox, Dog, Snake Debut (Anime): Naruto Episode 1 Debut (Manga): Chapter 1 This jutsu lets the user quickly switch places with another nearby object, such as a plant (normally a section of a log), an animal, or even another person within reach, leaving the opponent open to a counter-attack. Exploding tags can be attached to the replacement for an added surprise. Fundamentally, all ninja know this technique. The anime has a number of other objects being used for this jutsu, such as a boulder, mud, a scarecrow, and even a large rolled-up carpet. These items are usually nowhere in sight, suggesting that they are merely gags meant to lighten up the situation and not an actual part of the jutsu. Additionally, the normal practice of switching places with a section of log is done in several places that have no such thing anywhere nearby. | |

| Nagato's real body jutsu Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique (外道・輪廻天生の術, Gedō: Rinne Tensei no Jutsu) Type: Kekkei Genkai, Supplementary User: Nagato Hand Seals: Ram, Serpent Debut (Manga) Chapter 449 By summoning the King of Hell, Nagato can release the souls of those recently killed, bringing them back to life. The jutsu targets all souls killed, even those not necessarily killed by the Six Paths of Pain, such is the case with Kakashi Hatake who died from overuse of chakra. There also seems to be a time limit to when this technique can be used, as Nagato can only use it in a area where he is stationed nearby and not in far-off places. However this technique requires a massive amount of chakra, due to which it resulted in Nagato's death due to chakra overuse. Also, Nagato became severely weakened, and his hair became increasingly thinner and grayer during his use of the technique. Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path (口寄せ・外道魔像, Kuchiyose: Gedō Mazō) Type: Offensive User: Nagato Debut (Manga): Chapter 447 Nagato summons a giant statue that releases multiple chakra rods from its abdomen that pierce Nagato's back. When the rods are in place, Nagato uses the statue to spew a dragon-like creature from its mouth, which removes the souls of any person it comes in contact with. After serving its purpose, the chakra rods break off and remain embedded in Nagato's back while the statue disappears. The technique seems to take a considerable toll on Nagato, who becomes more and more emaciated for the duration of the technique. This began the moment the chakra rods penetrated his body. This statue is later used for the Sealing Technique: Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming Seals, which is to seal the nine tailed beasts. When used for this purpose, the statue has an added blindfold, a bit in its mouth, and shackles on its arms. As Nagato is now dead, Madara Uchiha claimed that they needed a new pawn to synchronize with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Wind Release: Violent Wind Palm (風遁・烈風掌, Fūton: Reppūshō; Viz "Wind Style: Gale Palm") Type: C-rank, Offensive, Supplementary, Short to mid-range (0-10m)[1] User: Nagato Hand Seal: Hands clapped together Debut (Manga): Chapter 373. A simple technique that sends a gust of concentrated wind at the opponent. The one time it is used in the series it propels a shuriken to increase its lethality. Mirrored Sudden Attacker Technique (鏡面襲者の術, Kyōmen Shūja no Jutsu) Type: A-rank, Offensive, Short range (0-5m)[1] User: Pain Debut (Anime): Shippūden Episode 18 Debut (Manga): Chapter 263 This technique is automatically activated when the "Forbidden" (禁, kin) tags creating the Five Seals Barrier are removed. An exact copy of the person who removed the tag will appear from the nearby ground and attack. From appearance to battle skill, everything is copied perfectly. The only difference is that the copy has a fixed amount of stamina, giving it an advantage in a drawn-out battle. Shinrai Tensei Banshō Ten'in Chakra Disruption Blades Chibaku Tensei | |
